THIS SUMMER IS A SCORCHER in Portland, with the temperatures in triple digits for days on end.
We all know that people die when it gets too hot. We've heard about elderly people dying in their homes from dehydration
and heat stroke, and about accidents on beaches and rivers when people ignore safety rules while trying to cool off.
Pets die in the heat, too, and when they do, it is sometimes because of human carelessness. Some owners leave their
pets outside with no protection from the sun, and no water, or not enough water. Others take their dogs running,
not thinking about the fact that the dog is wearing a fur coat and doesn't have Nikes to protect its pads from
pavement burns. Some people leave their pets to cook in cars that are as hot as kilns, and some chain their dogs
in the backs of pickups where the metal heats up like a sizzling skillet.
Even when people are alert and conscientious about their pets' welfare, the extra strain of extreme heat can put
pets, like people, at risk for health problems and heatstroke. If you think your pet might have heatstroke, it is very important
for it to be treated by a veterinarian immediately. Delay can be fatal.
Hollywood Pet Hospital has an email link on the web site for your convenience in contacting us. However, we
ask that you only use email to contact us for matters that are not urgent and don't require an immediate reply.
The staff at Hollywood Pet Hospital only checks email periodically during office hours. If you think your pet may
be ill or injured, please call us right away at 503-234-9229.
Our regular office hours are Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 7:15 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.;
Tuesdays 7:15 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.; Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The office is closed on Sunday. But if your
pet has an emergency on a Sunday, please don't wait until Monday to call us!
For emergencies occurring when we are closed, please take your pet to the
Dove Lewis Emergency Animal Hospital.
Their phone number is 503-228-7281, but they do not give medical diagnoses or advice over the phone.
Dove Lewis has two emergency hospitals:
- NW Portland at 1984 NW Pettygrove - Open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year

- East Portland, Plaza 205, 10564 SE Washington - Open Monday to Thursday, 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 a.m; and Friday 6:00 p.m. to Monday 8:00 a.m.
